ABOUT THE ROBERT STUART SALON

A New Yorker’s Vision: Our Intelligent Approach to Hair with a Personal Touch

Twenty-eight years ago, Robert Stuart had the idea that quality hairstyling need not be in the domain of the arrogant and the pretentious.

R_STUART_SALON_RISKO_NYER

Tired of the “scene” from his years working on 57th Street, in 1983 he opened his first full-service hair salon on Amsterdam Avenue at 82nd Sreet, an Upper West Side neighborhood known more for Zabar’s and psychotherapists than cutting-edge fashion and hair salons.

Since he lived in this neighborhood, he understood very well what Upper West Siders wanted – a personalized style that is easy to maintain and would “grow in nicely”.

In the early 90′s, in the era of corporate mergers, Robert decided to do the opposite. He downsized into a boutique hair salon focusing on hair only and moved to 84th St. on Amsterdam Avenue. He felt that in an era of globalization, a service business like his could at least offer that “personal touch”. He wanted to provide an intelligent approach to hair in a friendly, non-threatening environment where every client could trust that he and his staff understood their hair needs and could deliver uncompromising results.

Now, after 31 years on Amsterdam Avenue, the Robert Stuart Salon has moved and expanded to our new home on 461 Columbus Avenue on the northeast corner of 82nd St. on a landmark avenue one block north of the Museum of Natural History and one block west of beautiful Central Park. Intelligent hairdressing is still Robert’s goal, which he has instilled within his team of  New York City’s most talented and dedicated hair stylists.

We pride ourselves on paying careful consideration to each client’s hair texture, bone structure, lifestyle, and profession as we believe that hair is not “one look fits all”.  All of our products used and retailed are hand-picked for their ability to enhance the health and integrity of the hair and give our clients their desired style. Our loyal clientele keeps returning to The Robert Stuart Salon for the talent of our work as well as  the engaging conversation and dedication to customer service.

The last few days have been exceptionally hot and humid. We hope that all our friends are finding ways to stay cool – including by visiting us!

Hair during the summer months can be very trying. One of the issues a lot of us face is the dreaded FRIZZ due to the texture and porosity of hair which heat and humidity can affect. Fear not, we have a solution to your frizz. Keratin smoothing treatments can be the end of your frizz woes. They help to smooth down the cuticle and keep your hair frizz-free with minimal maintenance (sulfate free shampoo and conditioner could be all you need!). We offer a variety of different types of Keratin treatments to suit every type of hair. Come in for a free consultation with any of our Keratin certified stylists to find out more.

We have been busy bees around the salon this last week, hosting not one but 2 events back to back on Thursday and Friday. The first being a party our color line Wella threw for us in conjunction with US Weekly Magazine. The fete featured swag bags and champagne and guests were treated to manicures with our nail artist Cinthya, hair styling with Wella stying products, and Eve Pearl makeup applications.

This past week has been very eventful! First we had the “Step into the Spotlight” party with Us Weekly and Wella (see previous entry here for photos) on Thursday. And on Friday, June 21, (Summer Solstice – the longest day of the year) the Robert Stuart Salon celebrated our 30th anniversary – from 9AM to 9PM! We celebrated with cupcakes, champagne, gifts, and prizes. Renae, of Kerastase and Shu Uemura also came in to introduce products. And our new and lovely neighbors, Juice Press also stopped in during the afternoon to introduce their products to everyone who stopped by.

Here are some photos from our party.

Since the salon moved to 461 Columbus Avenue, we have been working together with Equinox on 76th Street (and Amsterdam), to promote each other as well as give special opportunities available for our clients only. If you’ve visited our salon on a Saturday, you may have had the pleasure of receiving a free chair massage from one of Equinox’s massage therapists. Recently we visited Equinox to offer their members free blowdries & style, make-up, and manicures. It was a great time for everyone and we can’t wait to participate again!

Reviews of the Robert Stuart Salon

“Robert Stuart is a Tonsorial Toscanini… seemingly incapable of turning out a bad hair cut.”

Steve Fox, Good Morning America

“Ten years ago I stood outside the Robert Stuart Salon thinking, Should I or shouldn’t I? I lived in the neighborhood. I’d read Susan Orlean’s piece in the New Yorker. I decided, “Why not give it a try? What was the worst that could happen?” I’d already had my share of bad haircuts. It never crossed my mind that I was about to meet the best haircutter of my life. But that’s what Robert is — the best! I’ve recommended him to everyone I know, including my husband and my friends. And it’s not just the great haircut (although that should be enough) — it’s the ambiance of this small, friendly salon. The no-nonsense prices. It’s making an appointment for a haircut and knowing you’ll be seen on time and out (in my case) in half an hour. Bad hair days are (almost) a thing of the past! Thank you, Robert!”
Judy Blume, Author

“I’ve only been coming here for 15 years! Why? Because it’s consistent and terrific. And it’s a great hang. Simply the best.”
John Pizzarelli, Musician

“I think of it as “Robert’s Place” a hip, local Cheers but with the qualities of a classic New York literary, as well as literal, salon. When I arrive I am frizzled, frazzled and out of steam. When I leave, I am a chic, coiffed New York professional woman, equally prepared for the classroom and the opera. No one cuts hair like Robert, and his staff reflect his unique talents and sensibility. As an oral historian at Columbia University, I have heard it all, but I always hear something new at “Robert’s Place”—our Post Modern Cheers.”
Mary Marshall Clark

“The only place in town that you leave feeling as good as you look! It’s a salon in the old sense of the word, a mixing of ideas, thoughts and feelings!”
Jill Cereda

“Robert takes my hair more seriously than I do.”
David Lane, playwright

“Robert Stuart is the Dalai Lama of hair. Robert Stuart is Einstein, only his hair is better.”
David Lane, playwright

“I can honestly say that the Robert Stuart Salon combines the best of New York Style: a warm welcome, sophisticated style and excellent service. Robert is amazing in making curly hair look stylish and the colorists, Theo and the others are deft and very capable with subtle color. It’s my favorite salon!”
Adeline Levine

“I love going to the Robert Stuart Salon where I get an excellent hair cut and color in an atmosphere of love. I feel comfort and ease as I relax and receive expert care and service. It is a joyful experience.”
Nives Matesic, founder of Feel Your Energy Dance

Awhile back ago, one of my regulars, Matthew Locricchio, an accomplished author, chef, actor, and playwright, gave me his newest book, Teen Cuisine New Vegetarian. The book is full of interesting, delicious recipes for everyone that almost anyone can make, catering to vegetarians, vegans, and even raw foodists.

Last week, during Matthew’s haircut, I found out that his book, Teen Cuisine New Vegetarian, has been nominated as a finalist for the 2013 IACP (International Association of Culinary Professionals) Cookbook Awards (to see the full list of 2013 finalists, click here)!

Congratulations Matthew! We’re so excited for you!

P.S. You can purchase Teen Cuisine New Vegetarian on Amazon.
